The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics is redefining the way musculoskeletal care is delivered across the region with locations throughout Maryland, DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
We are embarking on a time of year in which we begin to wear different footwear – at least, if the weather permits! Due to the warmer months ahead, most often this involves footwear with less support than shoes worn in the colder months.
It’s important to remember how wearing good supportive shoes will significantly impact our joints and in turn, our whole body. In addition to supportive shoes, some people may benefit from wearing inserts in their shoes to provide additional support to their feet and arches.
Many patients ask about the difference between "off-the-shelf" inserts purchased at a store, and ones that are custom made. Custom orthotics are unique to each person, as a cast or mold is made of the foot, and an orthotic specific for that person is fabricated by a licensed orthotist. Custom orthotics are more expensive than non-custom orthotics, but are necessary for some patients who have specific requirements for support, or for unique foot conditions.
Orthotics that are purchased at a store are universal in that they are not too rigid nor too soft. They are designed to provide additional cushioning in the shoe, as well as mild arch support. We have found that many patients do quite well with "off-the-shelf" orthotics to correct problems in the feet and legs.
However, not everyone requires an insert in their shoe. An incorrect insert can lead to increased pain due to a change in biomechanical positioning of the joints. Often, foot problems can be a result of weak or tight muscles that can be corrected through exercise. It is important to seek advice from your physician and/or your PT to obtain the correct advice and if it’s appropriate to wear orthotics.
And then there are flip flops and ballet flats…..I’m not suggesting not to wear them but please get ones that have some type of arch support– they may cost a little more but your feet (and body) will thank you!
